There is no such thing as clean coal

“Clean coal” is made-up nonsense phrase.  It’s a falsehood.  Because even when handled with all the care possible, it is still very “dirty”. Emissions into the air are just one issue.

The facts are:

  1. Coal is very polluting regardless of how it is mined and how it is burned.
  2. Burning of coal as a fuel in that past has caused huge amounts of environmental damage and direct human deaths. In China it still kills regularly. In the past it killed in places like London, England.
  3. The easy-to-mine and better quality coal has already been burned.  Coal is a finite resource that at some quickly approaching point we will be forced to stop using. Further investment in coal is not an investment in our future energy needs.
Investing in coal is putting future into the past.
  4. The fake “cleaning” of coal has been forced by governmental regulations. The coal industry has always fought all clean environment principles.  It has had to be forced to be cleaner:
    • by filtering smoke coming out of the chimneys where it is burned
    • by catching the CO2 and pushing this underground – will it stay? It is very expensive (Saskatchewan, Canada example)
  5. We end up paying for coal mine sites clean ups, for the very expensive technology to clean the smoke, to “store” the carbon dioxide (CO2).  We pay for it via prices on the energy we consume, and we pay for it by the degrading of the environment.  Clean coal is a lie.
  6. Coal has left a massive debt which is paid us and now they want a future debt too to be paid by future generations for their uncontrolled greed that has wreaked havoc on our environment and our society.

Coal fueled the past, it cannot fuel the future

We must not agree to factor out environmental costs to air, to water, and to the land. If coal companies want to continue, they must pay the costs up front, before they start mining and burning, and destroying the environment.
